Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds | McCaw Hall 2010

After a nice little hack job by someone, I had to rebuild Northwest Discovery.  While looking through files I came across this little gem I captured back in 2010.

There is a lot of great music that comes out of our part of the world.  We are also lucky to raise & attract  some amazing artists that decide to reside in our area.  Including one of my absolute favorites, Dave Matthews. Enjoy…

The Complete Joy of Home Brewing

Home brewing is on the mind.

So, while I wait for my home brewing supplies to arrive I stopped and got a book to keep the brain occupied. I stopped by the local book seller and bought The Complete Joy of Home Brewing by Charles Papazian. I am told it is the bible of making craft beer.

I read through several chapters last night and it is very good. The book is easy to read and very complete for the beginner to intermediate brewer. I definitely won’t need to read the whole book to get started, but it will be a great reference manual to have around.

Product Description from Amazon.com

Charlie Papazian, master brewer and founder and president of the American Homebrewer’s Association and Association of Brewers, presents a fully revised edition of his essential guide to homebrewing. This third edition of the best-selling and most trusted homebrewing guide includes a complete update of all instructions, recipes, charts, and guidelines. Everything you need to get started is here, including classic and new recipes for brewing stouts, ales, lagers, pilseners, porters, specialty beers, and honey meads.

The Complete Joy of Homebrewing, third edition, includes:

• Getting your home brewery together: the basics — malt, hops, yeast, and water

• Ten easy lessons for making your first batch of beer

• Creating world-class styles of beer (IPA, Belgian wheat, German Kölsch and Bock, barley wine, American lagers, to name a few)

• Using fruit, honey, and herbs for a spicier, more festive brew

• Brewing with malt extracts for an unlimited range of strengths and flavors

• Advanced brewing techniques using specialty hops or the all-grain method or mash extracts

• A complete homebrewer’s glossary, troubleshooting tips, and an up-to-date resource section

• And much, much more

Be sure to check out Charlie’s The Homebrewer’s Companion for over 60 additional recipes and more detailed charts and tables, techniques, and equipment information for the advanced brewer.

About the Author

Founding president of the American Homebrewers Association and organizer for the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup, Charlie PaPazian avidly brews lagers, ales and honey meads. He lives in Boulder, Colorado.

Harrison Hot Springs Resort

For a great weekend get-away check out Harrison Hot Springs Resort in British Columbia.

Find your getaway in Harrison Hot Springs. Located in the heart of British Columbia, less than two hours east of Vancouver and three hours from the Okanagan and Seattle, Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa is surrounded by mountains and nestled on the southern shore of Harrison Lake. Our spectacular British Columbia resort has been welcoming guests for nearly 125 years. From family vacations and romantic escapes to corporate meetings – Harrison Hot Springs Resort offers something for everyone, including five indoor and outdoor natural mineral hot springs pools, the soothing Healing Springs Spa, a Resort Marina offering fishing charters, lake tours, jet ski and boat rentals. Just minutes from our BC resort, guests can enjoy golf, waterslides, show gardens, eco tours and much more.

The room was a typical hotel room, but clean and comfortable. The kids loved the heated pools and it was a great break from the chill of winter.

The resort is close enough to Seattle we made it a one nighter and that was perfect. We left home early, stopped for lunch at Mission Springs Brewing Company and were in the hot pools by early afternoon. I think the area would be great in the summer. It appears there are many local hikes and of course lake activities. But for a quick winter adventure, one night proved plenty.

There is an adult pool for those of you traveling without kids.

Splash on!

Mission Springs Brewing Co.

We stopped at Mission Springs Brewing Company in Mission British Columbia on our way to Harrison Hot Springs Resort.  I am happy to report it was great.  The restaurant is large, clean and the décor is entertaining.

We have rarely had much success with good beer in Canada, but Mission Springs Brewing has figured out how to brew a nice hoppy northwest beer. The food menu was huge, food was good and the service was great.

Conveniently they have a liquor store attached to the restaurant (common in Canada) so we grabbed a few 22 ouncers to bring home.

Cheers to Mission Springs Brewing for brewing beers that taste like the Northwest.

PubQuest The Ultimate Trip Companion

Whether planning a day hike or our road trip to Yellowstone we always use PubQuest.  First we come up with a few ideas then go to PubQuest to see if it possible to accomplish with a nice cold pint along the way.  Trust me, we have changed plans and re-routed our trip (the long way) just to be sure and hit a brewpub of interest.

Who and why PubQuest?

PubQuest is the result of three people who share a passion for good beer and travel. When we think of “good beer,” our instincts and experience often send us to a craft brewery or brewpub. As we’ve traveled around the country over the years, we continually search out these local establishments. Although there are several great websites for identifying craft breweries and brewpubs, none puts all the places in one city on one map. Hence, the need for PubQuest!

Cheers to PubQuest!  A great beer traveler’s companion.

Snoqualmie Brewery

Nice Cold Pint: Snoqualmie Brewery & Taproom in Snoqualmie, WA

Snoqualmie Brewpub is located just down the street from Snoqualmie Falls. They offer a family friendly environment with a nice selection of good grub, including pizza and sandwiches. The service is always friendly and attentive. Love that Wildcat!

We are a small private company, located in historic downtown Snoqualmie, Washington. Founders Pat Anderson, David McKibben, Dave Eiffert, LeRoy Gmazel and Tom Antone did not have the sense to know that you had to be crazy to start a brewery in 1997, when most of the rest of the world thought the craft brewing industry was going down the tube, so 10 years later, here we are.

We commenced brewing operations in our new craft brewery near Snoqualmie Falls on December 20, 1997. Our original beers were formulated by Pat, and the initial batch of each was brewed by David, with Pat’s occasional assistance. Of Pat’s original beers, only Wildcat IPA remains today.

January 9, 1998, Rande Reed, formerly head brewer of Thomas Kemper and Pyramid, became head brewer at Snoqualmie Falls. Rande brought 12+ years of experience to our brewery, and is responsible for the unfailingly consistent high quality of our beer. Rande is ably assisted with production by Janelle Pritchard (AKA the Brewery Goddess), Kevin Gesell and Dane Jack-Sands. David Seigel is our outside sales manager, and Jaime Casady manages our Taproom, opened in April 2006. In 2008, Janelle was named General Manager, in addition to her production responsibilities.

Snoqualmie Brewery & Taproom is a fantastic starting point or finish to the many outdoor adventures along the I-90 corridor. Or, just check out the falls and then head down the road for a visit to the taproom.

Bike: St. Edward State Park

I just passed my bike hanging in the garage and thought I would share a popular ride, close to home. Saint Edward State Park is a 316 acres park run by Washington Sate Parks & Rec. Located in Kenmore, Washington. There are a series of trails running through the park for bicyclists and hikers. Lake Washington is accessible by trails along with the campus of Bastyr University. The park also offers baseball fields, an amazing children’s playground and a public swimming pool. During the Summer the park hosts a live music series, sponsored by the City of Kenmore and is home to the annual Washington Brewers Festival.

A distinctive main building is hard to miss as you enter the park. The old building is left over from the park’s unique history of being a Catholic seminary. Unfortunately a lack of funds and father time has left the building in poor condition and in need of renovation. There was interest by McMenamins to create a hotel, restaurant and public meeting area. Sadly, without any research into the great work McMenamins has done with other historic buildings, the proposal was loudly contested by a small group of “do-gooders”. Not wanting the contraversy the proposal was withdrawn by McMenamins in 2007. Now the building sits vacant, little used and further deteriorating.

St Edward Park is a great park for many interests. No time in the week to take your mountain bike up to the mountains. No problem, there are many great trails in the park. Check it out.
